Damon Johnston
Damon began rock climbing at Carter Rock, Maryland, in 1987. He went on to totally fall in love with the sport and was fortunate to have had several amazing mentors through out his years on the rock, ice, and in the mountains. He and, climbing partner, Charlie Fowler met at the base of the Falls Walls, Telluride in 1997 and began establishing new rock climbs right away (a habit that lasted almost 10 years, until Charlie’s death in a climbing accident on Mt. Genyen, China, in November 2006). Damon and Charlie co-founded Mountain World Media LLC in 2004 and published their first title: The Wild Wild West (a guide to desert rock climbing in southwest Colorado—an area home to over 700 sandstone rock climbs). Then, in 2005, they co-authored Telluride Rocks III which included many of newly developed climbing areas such as Falls Walls, Upper Bear Creek, The Pipeline Wall, and many others. After Charlie’s death MWM (along with his new business partner Ginny Fowler Hicks—Charlie’s sister) continued to publish other climbing and mountain related titles, including: A Guide To Bouldering In The Telluride & West End Areas Of Southwest Colorado by Christian Prellwitz, in 2006, Mountain Star by Ginny Fowler Hicks in 2008, and most recently Damon has rewritten the newest edition of San Juan Ice Climbs in 2009 (originally hand written & illustrated by Charlie Fowler).
Damon has climbed all over the world and has established hundreds of new routes over the last 22 years. His other interests include: photography, running, soloing long alpine routes, cross-country skiing, and working in high places. Damon continues to explore and put up new climbs with good friends at every opportunity. He enjoys it all—rock, ice, mountains, and most recently bouldering.
